Kitchen display (KDS): order flow and recall
See the kitchen queue, start and finish each item, hold or rush a ticket, recall a finished ticket and log kitchen waste.
Item and ticket status
Each bill shows as one ticket on the kitchen display. Every item line has a button for its stage: tap Start when you begin, Done when it is finished, and Return if it has to be made again. Complete order finishes every remaining item at once and marks the ticket served; it leaves the screen after a few seconds (tap to dismiss it now).
Good to know
- Items added on the POS or ordered by customers through QR appear on the kitchen display immediately; the kitchen display needs no send-to-kitchen button.
- A store with kitchen tickets on (Settings › Receipts & printers › Kitchen tickets) also gets a paper ticket per round. The kitchen display can print them: set it up from the settings button on the kitchen display.
Working the kitchen queue
Older tickets come first, except tickets marked Rush, which always go to the front. Each ticket shows the table or type (dine in / takeaway), when it was opened, the options and the kitchen notes. Read them all before you start.
Steps
- Read the items, options and notes on the next ticket
- Tap Start on the item you begin cooking
- Tap Done item by item, or Complete order when everything is out
Hold, rush and recall
Buttons at the bottom of a ticket: Hold moves it to the on-hold section (Resume puts it back in the queue), Rush moves it to the front (Normal removes the rush), and Recall brings a finished ticket back to cooking.
Good to know
- Marked the wrong ticket as done? Tap Recall before it leaves the screen. If it has already gone, look in Older backlog or tell the counter.
Filter by station and channel
At the top of the screen you can filter by Station (for example grill, fryer, cold), Service and Channel, change the font size and switch the Alert sound on or off. Tickets left over from earlier days sit in Older backlog; open it to finish them.
Good to know
- The station filter appears when the store routes items to kitchen stations.
Expo screen, prep-time targets and ready times
Tap Expo at the top of the kitchen display (or open /kds/expo) to see every station of each order together. An order whose items are all done turns green, shows All ready and moves to the top; tap Served when it goes out, and Recall in the Just served strip if it went out by mistake. Ticket colours and each item's clock compare against its target: green on time, amber nearly late, red late. Under the clock is the estimated ready time, from the dish's actual prep times over recent days plus the dishes ahead of it at the same station.
Steps
- The owner sets targets in Reports › Kitchen pace › TargetsPer menu category, per station and a default. Without them: 20 minutes, amber at half, as before
- Stores with someone on the pass turn on Use an expo (pass) screenA station's All done then keeps the order on the expo until it is marked served
- See where the kitchen is slow in Reports › Kitchen paceNow / History: late orders, average prep time by station, dish and hour
Good to know
- The ready time also shows on the POS bill. Guests see it on the QR order page and queue ticket only when the owner turns that on.
- Prep time runs from the moment an item reaches the kitchen until it is marked done on the kitchen display; a kitchen that never marks items done has no report data.
Log waste from the kitchen
Tap Record waste on the kitchen display, then choose the branch, the ingredient thrown away, the quantity and a reason (for example expired, dropped or damaged, wrong dish). Stock is deducted at once and the entry goes to a manager for review. Kitchen staff do not see costs.
Steps
- Tap Record waste on the kitchen display
- Choose the ingredient and enter the quantity
- Pick the reason and saveYou can log the next item straight away
Orders not reaching the kitchen, or the screen not updating
Look at the status bar. If it says the connection was lost, the screen reconnects by itself and syncs the taps you made. A store with offline kitchen display keeps working while the internet is down and syncs when it returns. Check that a station or channel filter is not hiding tickets, and that the screen is on the same branch as the POS.
Good to know
- Do not tap the same button again and again while offline; wait for it to sync.
- If the screen asks you to register the device, register this device as the branch's kitchen display first.
- If the screen says the kitchen display is not enabled, the owner can switch it on in Settings › Store features.
